Malay dance in the Malay community of the Riau Islands reflects a rich cultural heritage shaped by centuries of history. Despite challenges posed by modernization, ongoing efforts are dedicated to preserving and revitalizing this traditional art form. Integral to the identity and unity of the Malay people in the Riau Islands, Malay dance serves as a cultural cornerstone. Sustaining this heritage demands collaboration among government bodies, communities, schools, and individuals. Through strategic planning and unwavering commitment, Malay dance can thrive amidst evolving societal dynamics, ensuring its enduring presence within Malay cultural identity. This research employs qualitative methodologies such as case studies, ethnography, in-depth interviews, document analysis, and focus group discussions (FGDs). These approaches provide a comprehensive exploration of Malay dance within the Riau Islands Malay community, delving into its cultural, social, and historical dimensions. The study identifies challenges to the preservation of Malay dance, including limited exposure and formal education, competition from mainstream culture, inadequate resources and financial support, scarcity of role models, shifting values and priorities, constrained time availability, and a lack of innovative presentation methods among students. Addressing these challenges necessitates concerted efforts in education, promotion, support, and creative innovation to safeguard the vitality and relevance of Malay dance for future generations.
